Protecting Your Business Assets — Outdoor Educators

In the outdoors, there’s risk in most everything you do, whether you’re climbing a rock wall or just pounding in a tent stake. For outdoor educators that risk is amplified. Because you’re not only responsible for your own safety and actions, but for those of staff, students, volunteers, presenters, even fundraiser attendees.

The Outdoor Educators Insurance Program from Payne Financial Group has worked with outdoor education organizations for more than ten years. Over that time, we’ve carefully honed an approach that’s proven itself repeatedly with the top institutes in the country.

We begin with a thorough risk survey that helps assess your operations, your range and level of risk, and how those risks overlap. Then, based on our industry knowledge and your unique operation, we create an insurance package that fits your needs like good hiking boots fit your feet.

Our custom packages combine general liability, vehicle and property coverage, directors and officers coverage, employment practices liability, sexual molestation liability and more. All are designed to cover your operations fully — from field work to office equipment — and your people completely. And all are provided from top-rated carriers.

Protecting Your Business Assets — Outdoor Liability Coverage

Depending on your operation, there are many potential liabilities, ranging from injury to employment practices to volunteer interaction with students. Our program looks at each of those liabilities and creates a custom package that provides you the coverage you need without excess.

General Liability Coverage — Covers damages you are obligated to pay because of direct bodily injury or property damage you cause to a third party.

Sexual Molestation — Covers the actual or threatened molestation or sexual misconduct against anyone in your care, custody and control.

Directors & Officers Coverage — Covers wrongful acts by director's & officers of a board such as errors and omissions, misstatements, misleading statements, wrongful acts and breach of duty.

Employment Practices Liability — Covers employment related infractions against an employee such as wrongful termination, discrimination and sexual harassment.

Protecting Your Business Assets — Outdoor Benefits Insurance

Benefits insurance covers your property and your people, be they volunteers, staff or event attendees. In the case of outdoor educators, that requires a combination of typical types of insurance, such as auto, general liability and property coverage; and specialized coverages designed for your organization’s unique needs.

Instructors & Volunteers Liability — We have a custom coverage clause that has been added to the liability policy, which extends coverage for all instructors and volunteers.

Loss of Income — Traditionally loss of income coverage will only apply if there is a direct physical loss to your property. One of the largest financial threats organizations face is a national park closure due to a forest fire. Because there is no direct physical loss there has been no loss of income coverage for this situation. Our program includes loss of income coverage in the event of a park closure.

Directors & Officers — We have the most comprehensive directors and officers policy available. Not only does it cover the directors and officers, it also includes employment practices coverage (discrimination, wrongful termination, sexual harassment), unlimited defense costs and $100,000 for wage and hour defense.

Professional Liability — We include this in the program because the standard general liability only covers you for direct bodily injury or property damage you cause to a third party. If you are sued for anything that is not direct, but strictly monetary, professional liability will apply. An example would be if an instructor decides to do something in the field that cause students to be dissatisfied with the program and want their money back.

Medical Professional — We include this coverage because the standard general liability does not cover medical malpractice; it excludes doctors, nurses and all of those who have medical designations. We’ve found that many in the outdoor industry have the Wilderness First Aid Responder designations. We want to make sure there are no gray areas as to whether coverage applies in the event medical treatment is provided.

Commercial Vehicle — We provide non-owned and hired auto coverage for those who don't have vehicles but may use their own personal vehicle for business. We can also provide coverage for buses and 15 passenger vans.

Protecting Rour Business Assets — Outdoor Risk Management

The single biggest factor in insurance rates is risk. By managing yours, we can help reduce the cost associated with covering your property and people. Here are a few of the tools we use to help our clients manage and mitigate risk.

Risk Management Assessment — All clients receive a world-class risk assessment from Outdoor Safety Institute. The initial assessment compares each client’s risk management practices with industry norms and guides them along the path toward improved practices. The process begins with an online survey regarding major areas of safety and liability concern. Based on your responses to the survey, OSI prepares a custom report detailing risk management strengths and areas for potential improvement. Additional services are also available for on-site risk management audits and custom consulting.

Department of Motor Vehicle Reports — These are available to all clients at no cost. The goal is to make you aware of any potential risks.

Background Checks — Employee background checks are available to help in the hiring process and prevent future employee issues. These are available at a highly discounted rate.

Claims Consultants — If a claim does arise, Payne Financial Group’s claims consultants will work hand and hand with you and the insurance company to make sure your interests are covered and handled appropriately.

Collective Knowledge — One of the greatest assets of our program is your peer organizations. Listening to other organizations and using their collective knowledge helps us modify and improve the program.
